Why go in June
Long days, greenery, fewer midges than mid-summer
About Scottish Highlands
The Highlands are Scotland at its most elemental: glens carved by ice, single-track roads over empty moorland, and lochs that mirror the sky on the rare still day. Half-ruined castles stand at the water's edge, and the weather changes by the hour.
When to go
Late spring through early autumn gives the longest daylight and the best odds of dry spells — in June the sun is up past 10pm. It's prime time for a Loch Ness and Highlands day tour or to drive the North Coast 500 before the roads fill up. Pack layers whatever the forecast says.
What it costs indicative, varies by date
Things to do book tickets & tours
Search for Nessie on Loch Ness, stand beneath the viaduct at Glenfinnan, and follow Glencoe's brooding valley. A whisky distillery tour is essential, and a day trip to the Isle of Skye delivers the Highlands' most dramatic coastline if you've time for one big excursion.
